The last public hearing on how Tucson will implement the state-mandated law is set for Tuesday.
A new Arizona law requires cities to allow development of triplexes in neighborhoods that are zoned for single-family use.
The city last week released three proposals to comply with the new state law that requires cities with a population of at least 75,000 people to more easily allow for duplexes, triplexes, fourplexes and townhomes on all lots zoned for single-family use within one mile of its central business district.
In Tucson those boundaries are loosely Prince Road on the north, Silverlake Road on the south, Country Club road on the east and Silverbell Road on the west.
The plan preferred by city staff, however, recommends expanding the area to a larger portion of the metro area, encompassing about 64 square miles.

The two other plans also are set to be presented to the council Tuesday night, though they are less likely to be adopted.
The minimum compliance option would be permitted within one mile of the city's "Infill Incentive District" and would cover about 16 square miles.
And the third option calls for the middle housing law to be applied citywide.

• Restricting middle housing to less than two stories;
• Setting permitting rules that are more restrictive than for single-family homes;
• Requiring owner-occupancy of any structure on the lot;
• and there is no requirement from the state to require parking
All affected cities in Arizona must comply by Jan. 1, or middle housing will be allowed on all lots currently zoned for single-family residential use without any limitations.
The new state law does not allow cities to mandate affordable housing, but city officials say research shows that increasing housing stock positively impacts affordability.
