The former president of the Nogales Police Officers’ Association was sentenced to probation and ordered to pay back nearly $40,000 he embezzled from the organization.
Victor Hetherington was sentenced to four years of probation after pleading guilty in September to computer tampering, Attorney General Kris Mayes said in a news release.
Hetherington made 689 unauthorized withdrawals between 2018 and 2023, which at the time accounted for about half of the group's operational budget, the release said.
Hetherington put funds in a personal account to pay off credit cards, dining, gambling and for dental work, the release said.
Hetherington, a retired 20-year veteran of the Nogales Police Department, was sentenced Nov. 10 in Santa Cruz Superior Court.
