A 24-year-old Tucson man has been sentenced to nearly two years in prison in a drug case that involved fruit-flavored cocaine, authorities say.
Jaden Alfredo Covarrubias was sentenced on Nov. 24 to 1.75 years in prison and ordered to pay fines after pleading guilty to a felony count of solicitation to possess a narcotic drug for sale, court records show.
Covarrubias solicited another person to possess about 1.55 pounds of cocaine, the Arizona Attorney General’s Office said Thursday in a news release.
Covarrubias also sold and offered to sell drugs on social media platforms, like WhatsApp, the release said.
The sentencing prompted Attorney General Kris Mayes to issue a public warning about the growing trend of flavored illegal drugs being sold.
"Today we are issuing a consumer alert for this new illegal drug that's being sold to kids and young women. It's called flavored cocaine and it's being sold in the flavors like piña colada, strawberry, coconut, and banana," Mayes said in the release.
