Arizona’s Tony Pluta added an academic all-American honor to his string of on-field accomplishments last season.
The UA closer was named a first-team academic all-American by the College Sports Communicators on Tuesday. He was one of three juniors and two players from an Arizona university listed on the Division I team.
Just last week, Pluta earned his sixth all-American honor after D1Baseball named him a second-team All-American.
Other previous accolades include first-team honors from the College Baseball Foundation, American Baseball Coaches Association and National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. He was also named Stopper of the Year — a prestigious award given to the best relief pitchers in the U.S. — by the NCBWA last month.
Pluta received additional second-team nods from Baseball America and Perfect Game.

And if a stacked shelf of athletic awards wasn’t enough, the Illinois native earned the Big 12 baseball Scholar-Athlete of the Year award earlier this year, too.

During the regular season, Pluta recorded 14 saves, breaking the program’s single-season record. He is currently tied at No. 4 in Division I baseball for saves, according to the NCAA.
Throughout his 30 appearances, he pitched a total of 37 innings, logging a 1.46 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and limited opposing hitters to a .219 batting average.
At the NCAA Super Regional in North Carolina last month, Pluta recorded the last out of the series, helping the Wildcats secure a 4-3 win over the Tar Heels that sent them to the College World Series for the first time in four years.
Pluta is a draft-eligible junior who could be selected in the MLB Draft later this month., the Star previously reported.
