Deandre Ayton didn’t need to wait until draft night to become a millionaire.
The departing Arizona freshman, who is expected to be the No. 1 pick in Thursday’s NBA Draft, signed an endorsement deal with Puma along with Duke’s Marvin Bagley, the company announced Monday.
While Puma did not announce the terms, the Athletic reported that Bagley’s deal is expected to be a five-year deal that is the most valuable since Kevin Durant picked up a seven-year $60 million deal with Nike in 2007.
Whatever Ayton’s numbers were, Ayton made it clear they were the reason he signed. Ayton told Bleacher Report that when seeking a shoe deal “you’re really trying to go bank,†and explained why:
“I don’t really care. Anybody can really make your shoe,†Ayton told Bleacher Report. “We’re not kids anymore. We’re not looking for product. Of course, the brands are going to do their best to give you the best product they have. At the end of the day, it’s a business.â€

Puma hadn’t signed an NBA player since Vince Carter in 1998, but Ayton also said Puma was a known brand in his native Bahamas and that he felt comfortable with it.
“Anybody can make the best shoe for you and put the right fit in the shoe,†Ayton told Bleacher Report. “We were dealing with Nike people, Under Armour and all the other shoe companies for a pretty long time. We ain’t really got bad blood with any of them, but it’s not bad to start something new. We just thought Puma was the right fit.â€
Ayton played high school and travel ball out of San Diego with Under Armour-affiliated clubs while later moving to Phoenix to play for Nike-sponsored Hillcrest Prep. He also played travel ball for the Nike-sponsored California Supreme.
For Bagley, the signing was a move away from Nike, which had sponsored travel teams he played for that his father operated. Bagley told Bleacher Report he wanted to join Puma “to be different.â€
“I saw an opportunity where I could come in and build from the jump and work to get to a certain level,†Bagley said. “They have some real nice stuff. I’m very excited about it, and I can’t wait to get to know everybody, keep working with everybody and keep improving.â€
