(This college football season, Arizona football beat reporter Justin Spears is trying out popular restaurants in towns the Wildcats are playing in. Up first: Dark Horse Bar and Grill.)Ìý
BOULDER, Colorado — Less than two miles from Folsom Field sits a Boulder staple, Dark Horse Bar and Grill — excuse me,ÌýThe World FamousÌýDark Horse Bar and Grill.
Two years ago, following Arizona's walk-off win over the Buffaloes, we went to "The Sink" for its reuben sandwich. This time, before the Wildcats hammered Colorado 52-17, we went to Dark Horse.Ìý
Restaurant:ÌýDark HorseÌý
Food:ÌýBurgers, sandwiches, wings, steak, finger foods
The rundown:ÌýDark Horse opened in 1975 and has been serving up Colorado Buffaloes fans and students for 50 years.Ìý

The dimly-lit restaurant has TVs everywhere, a few pool tables and has become a popular hang-out spot for CU fans and sports watchers. "Colorado Cats," the UA's alumni group in Colorado, have often hosted gatherings before Arizona-CU games — husbands met their wives, and people became longtime friends.Ìý

Part of Dark Horse's charm is its interior décor. As stated on : "Decorated from top to bottom with movie props and turn-of-the-century antiques, the décor and atmosphere is sure to boggle your mind and gratify your senses."Ìý
Dark Horse's bathrooms can be confusing to some folks, especially after a few Coors Lights. The door of the men's room has a women's hand and leg pointing to the women's bathroom on the right, and vice versa.Ìý
Dark Horse is mostly known for its burgers. They have a dozen different burger options — and two vegan burger options.Ìý
The order:ÌýJiffy burger with fries
The final verdict:ÌýOne of my all-time favorite burgers is "Blue Suede Cow," which is a burger with chopped bacon, grilled onions, pepper jack cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles ... and peanut butter.
It doesn't sound like peanut butter should be on a burger, but if you enjoy sweet and savory foods, it's something you have to try at least once. I enjoy a good burger and I consume peanut butter bi-daily, so trying the Blue Suede Cow — named after Elvis Presley, who often enjoyed a fried peanut butter, banana and bacon sandwich — was life-changing for me.Ìý

The Jiffy Burger at Dark Horse has a one-third-pound beef patty, peanut butter, provolone cheese, bacon, onion, pickle, tomato, lettuce and mayonnaise on a toasted roll.
The peanut butter was a key player in the sandwich, but it wasn't overwhelming, like a cerebral quarterback complementing his teammates. Each bite had a taste of different ingredients and the peanut butter was a perfect accent. It also didn't collapse in my hand like some places known for their burgers.
Additionally, the fries were perfectly seasoned and crispy, however, a majority of them were broken up into several pieces — like potato cereal. But did I contemplate drizzling ranch on the fries and eat it with a spoon? You betcha.Ìý
Considering the meal cost me $13, it was the ideal pregame meal for a busy day at Folsom Field. Solid 7/10.Ìý
