Arizona hit the practice field for the first time in 2025 as the Wildcats kicked off their spring football practice schedule on Tuesday.Â
Here are some takeaways from the opening day of spring ball for Arizona, which lasted 14 periods:Â
* The offense has a different pace under new offensive coordinator Seth Doege. Arizona's receivers and tight ends worked on shorter routes and screens throughout Tuesday's practice. With the additions of New Mexico transfer Luke Wysong and Washington State transfer Kris Hutson at slot receiver and Chris Hunter III returning, quarterback Noah Fifita's average depth of target (ADOT) could drop from the 8.7 yards he averaged in 2024, but it could translate to more yards after catch — and more points. The uptempo, no-huddle concept is be a stark contrast to the slow-developing plays that required precise execution.Â
* Kansas State transfer Tre Spivey III, son of former Arizona Diamondback and Tucson Sidewinder Junior Spivey, was a starter at "X" receiver, the position previously played by Tetairoa McMillan. Replacing arguably the best receiver in program history isn't a simple task, but the 6-4, 213-pound Spivey looks the part of Arizona's next big-bodied standout at receiver.
