What is the leading cause of death in Arizona?

Death and taxes. They are inevitable. But sometimes we can stave off death for a few years.

The used data from the National Center for Health Statistics and National Vital Statistics System to compile the leading causes of death by state, region and for the United States. The most recent statistics available are for 2015.

Overall, the leading cause of death in Arizona is cancer, followed closely by heart disease. This isn't a surprise. But when broken down by age group, we see that there were many deaths that were preventable.

In the 10-14 age group, suicide and accidental death are tied for the leading cause of death.

Accidental death ranks high for all age groups. The category covers all manner of unintentional injuries including car crashes, falls, and drownings.

Homicide ranks in the top 10 causes of death for age groups from 1-4 years through 45-54 years, and suicide appears high in most age groups.

Read on for more details. Count less than 10 have been suppressed.
