Endangered horse species grows with birth of foal
A foal from a critically endangered species of horse appears to be thriving after being born earlier in June at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. The youngster is a Przewalski’s horse, a critically endangered species that has survived for the last 40 years almost entirely in zoos around the world. The foal was born to mother Nikki and father Ziggy through a breeding program to ensure genetic diversity. The zoo says efforts are underway to restore the species to its native habitat in the grasslands of China and Mongolia.
