The primary election race for Tucson’s Ward 3 shows a 19-vote victory for incumbent Kevin Dahl against challenger Sadie Shaw, updated results released Monday show.
That means a recount.
The city council is set to meet online at 1 p.m. Tuesday to canvass the election results. A recount would happen after that.
requires an automatic recount for any primary or general election races when the final ballot count is less than one-half of one percent of the votes cast in the race.
If the recount confirms Dahl’s win, he will face Republican Janet “JL†Wittenbraker in November’s general election.
Updated results released by the City Clerk’s Office Monday afternoon show Dahl received 3,296, 19 votes more than Shaw’s 3,277 votes.

Dahl, who is seeking a second term to represent the ward which covers much of Tucson’s north side, initially declared victory shortly after results first released on Aug. 5, the evening of Tucson’s primary election for three seats on the council. That night, Dahl held a 138-vote lead over Shaw, a member of the Tucson Unified School District governing board.
By Friday that margin shrunk, when an updated count showed Shaw had pulled within 19 votes of Dahl.
Nearly a third of registered Democrats in Tucson voted in the three primary races, according to Monday afternoon’s updated results.
Ward 3 was the only close race across the three primary elections. Initial results released on election night showed that Selina Barajas and Miranda Schubert easily won their primary races for Wards 5 and 6, respectively.
Barajas faces no Republican challenger in the Nov. 4 general election.
Schubert will face Republican Jay Tolkoff in the general election.
