Affordable Housing In The US Moves From Stigma To Solution
A new survey shows America’s housing crisis is changing how people view affordable housing, with many now seeing it in a positive light. Over half of US adults say they spend more than they should on housing, averaging 42% of their annual income on housing costs. As a result, 63% now view the term “affordable housing†positively, according to a survey by Built and Talker Research. Affordable housing was viewed more positively (83%) than townhomes (76%), apartments (70%), or mobile/pre-fab homes (64%). Some still associate affordable housing with public housing (33%) or poverty (23%), but 1 in 3 say it’s meant for anyone. 73% of people believe housing options should be plentiful in their area, and 74% think housing costs need to be stabilized. While 65% would support new housing in their neighborhood, with most saying governments must lead the response. The survey shows that affordable housing is now seen as essential to most Americans, a mainstream solution to the rising cost of living, which is impacting families across all income levels.Â
