Photos: 50 years of the Loft Cinema in Tucson

Aug. 30, 2022 is the Loft Cinema's 50th anniversary.

The original building that housed the old Loft Theatre at 504 N. Fremont Ave. pre-dates the establishment of the New Loft Theatre as an "art house" movie theatre. In 1972, Nancy Sher, daughter of the owner of the chain of Art Guild Theatres, converted it back into an art house after an ignominious run as a soft porn theatre.

The original theatre survived an arson fire in the restaurant below in 1977 but it couldn't survive the wrecking ball. The University of Arizona bought the building and several other original homes and businesses along 6th Street to make way for a parking garage in 1997.聽

The Loft reopened in the old Showcase Cinema building on E. Speedway as the Loft Cinema.
