2 dead in quake-hit mine; 3 still missing
WARSAW — Polish rescue workers on Sunday found the bodies of two miners after an earthquake hit a coal mine in southern Poland.
Three other miners remain missing some 2,950 feet below ground. The quake hit Saturday morning at the mine, in the town of Jastrzebie-Zdroj, close to Poland’s border with the Czech Republic.
More than 200 workers were involved in the rescue operation, working through twisted machinery and metal parts to get to the area where they expect to find the missing men.

Bombing in mosque kills 14, wounds 33
KABUL — A bomb blast inside a mosque in eastern Afghanistan that was being used as a voter registration center killed at least 14 people and wounded 33, officials said Sunday.

Talib Mangal, spokesman for the provincial governor in Khost, said the blast happened “while people were busy with prayers, meanwhile in other part of the mosque people had gathered to get their voter registration cards.”
Afghanistan plans to hold elections in October, the first since 2014.

Retweet on violence gets journalist fired
MEXICO CITY — Mexico’s largest media company has severed ties with a prominent journalist after he came under fire for retweeting a message seen as inciting violence against the country’s front-running presidential candidate.
Televisa’s news division said Sunday that it was ending its relationship with Ricardo Aleman. It also said it will cancel his program “La Mudanza” on Foro TV.
Aleman said he retweeted the message as a warning about such threats, not to endorse the sentiment. The tweet accuses front-runner Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador’s leftist Morena party of “lynching and demanding censorship.”

Airport dogs to seek explosives in cargo
LONDON — British officials say dogs trained to detect explosives are being deployed at airports to screen cargo.
The Department of Transport said Sunday that each dog has been trained for 12 months to be able to detect small traces of explosives. They will be based in airport cargo sheds to screen large volumes of freight.
Aviation minister Elizabeth Sugg said the dogs “will bolster our existing rigorous security methods.”
Dogs are already deployed at U.K. airports — including London’s sprawling Heathrow Airport — to aid police in identifying criminals and preventing drug transport and other illegal activities.
El Salvador
Series of quakes damages homes
SAN SALVADOR — A swarm of earthquakes shook southern El Salvador on Sunday, damaging dozens of homes, but there were no immediate reports of serious injuries or deaths.
The U.S. Geological Survey said at least nine quakes of magnitude 4.3 or greater struck the region beginning in the morning, including three of magnitude 5.2 to 5.6.
The Central American nation’s civil defense agency posted photos online of damaged roofs and rock slides. It said at least 75 homes had damage and three were destroyed.
Civil defense director Jorge Melendez said one of the quakes unleashed slides on a highway leading to Playa El Cuco, one of the most visited tourist beaches in the area.
Nigeria
40 killed in armed attack by bandits
MAIDGURI — Armed bandits attacked a village in Nigeria’s northwest Kaduna state, killing at least 40 people, residents and officials said.
Police Inspector General Ibrahim Idris confirmed the bandits invaded the village of Gwaska on Saturday, fighting local defense forces protecting the Birnin Gwari local government area, a community of about 3,000 people. He said 200 policemen and 10 patrol vehicles were deployed to the scene.
A resident who helped fight the bandits said at least 40 people were killed and that the toll is expected to climb.
