A corrections officer shot and killed a jail inmate Wednesday afternoon at Banner University Medical Center South, authorities say.
The unidentified male inmate had been taken to the hospital near East Ajo Way and South Country Club Road for medical treatment, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said in a news conference.
“An inmate was receiving treatment in a hospital room when an altercation occurred, and the corrections officer assigned to the inmate fired her department issued firearm,†the department said in a news release.
Neither the corrections officer nor anyone else at the hospital was injured.

Deputies swarmed the hospital immediately after the shooting, which occurred just before 1 p.m. There was still a large police presence late Wednesday afternoon, but the hospital had returned to normal operations.

The multi-agency Pima County Regional Critical Incident Team, which investigates officer-involved shootings here, is handling the criminal probe. Oro Valley police will be the primary investigating agency, and Tucson police will be secondary.
