Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos updated his public résumé after found it misrepresented his work history.
The Republic reported that records show Nanos resigned in 1982 in lieu of termination from the El Paso Police Department after disciplinary problems, two years earlier than was stated on his résumé.
The résumé was corrected as of Tuesday to show Nanos left the El Paso department in 1982, not 1984. The Sheriff's Department described the résumé errors as administrative and unintentional.
Nanos had initially declined to answer The Republic's questions about his work history and accused the newspaper of writing a “hit piece."

His department's written statement Tuesday after The Republic's initial article did not acknowledge the reporting, by Republic national reporter Stephanie Murray, with the El Paso police, where he worked from 1976 to 1982.
The Republic reported: "Nanos was suspended or put on leave without pay for a cumulative 37 days during his time in the El Paso department," "was disciplined for alleged use of excessive force, a shot fired, off-duty gambling, tardiness, failure to report for duty and other violations of rules and regulations," and "received written reprimands for dereliction of duty, making threats and use of the siren on a police vehicle that violated the department’s orders. In total, 26 allegations were listed on Nanos' internal affairs history card over a five-year period."
The Pima County Sheriff's Department said Nanos has “demonstrated a steadfast commitment to professionalism” in his decades-long career in law enforcement. He leads the department "with experience, integrity, and a clear focus on protecting the residents of Pima County,” a spokeswoman said.
The sheriff, an elected Democratic official, has made national headlines overseeing the department's high-profile investigation into the Feb. 1 disappearance of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, a retired University of Arizona communications professional and the mother of NBC "Today" show host Savannah Guthrie.
