Mica Mountain earned another state championship game appearance with another road upset.
The No. 7 Thunderbolts traveled to No. 6 Yuma Gila Ridge on Friday and won 31-3 in the Class 4A state semifinals. In the quarterfinals the week before, Mica Mountain went to No. 2 Snowflake and won 21-14.
It was the second straight season Mica Mountain traveled west for the semifinals, as they beat No. 1 Yuma Catholic last year in the final four, 24-14.
The Thunderbolts are back to defend their 2024 state championship title despite returning only one offensive starter and six defensive starters from last season.
Mica Mountain held a Gila Ridge side that averaged 36.9 points per game to three. Mica Mountain has allowed 87 points (6.7 per game) this season.

Atlanta Falcons running back Bijan Robinson gained 193 yards and reached 30 touchdowns in his career (46 games), the fastest a Falcon has ever achieved the feat. The Salpointe alumnus rushed for 142 yards on 23 carries and had five catches for 51 yards in Atlanta’s 27-24 loss to the Jets on Sunday.
