Tucson-area high school golfers teed up last week at the state golf tournament in hopes of returning home with championship titles.
During the two-day events at the Aguila Golf Course in Laveen Village, many local golfers swung their way onto the leaderboards.
In the Div. II boys tournament, the elite Catalina Foothills golf program took home third place (tied with Arcadia) with a total of 591. The team logged a 302 on Day 1 and 289 on Day 2.
Salpointe Catholic finished in ninth (610) and Mica Mountain came in 11th (621).
Individually, Catalina Foothills senior Chase Cesarek had the best finish from Tucson at 11th place. The former ÃÛÌÒÓ°ÏñAV HS Student-Athlete of the Week recorded a 72 each day, for a total of 144.

Cesarek is currently ranked No. 6 in the state (18-hole rounds), while the whole Catalina Foothills team is ranked No. 1 in Arizona for 9-hole and 18-hole rounds.
Before his final season at Catalina Foothills, Cesarek finished third in the PING Invitational at the Grand Canyon University Golf Course.
He also won the Brophy Rodeo title for the second time this past August, reported.
“It’s been a joy every day since he (Cesarek) walked into the program. He has a smile on his face, with a (positive) attitude. He works hard with everything that I put in front of him. Always, he always puts in the work,†Julie Walters, Catalina Foothills head boys golf coach, told the Star last year. “He’s just such a great kid, a great player.â€

In August, Cesarek verbally committed to Utah Tech University, where he will play Div. I golf starting next fall.
Back at the Div. I boys tournament in Laveen Village, Marana senior Riley Stidham placed 20th in the state finals, tied with three other golfers from the Phoenix area.
While no Southern Arizona girls golf team took home the state title, Canyon del Oro snagged the runner-up title in Div. II with a score of 675. The team secured a 342 on Day 1 and 333 on Day 2.
Salpointe Catholic finished sixth (688), followed by Catalina Foothills in seventh (695) and Sahuarita in eighth (699).
In the individual round, Mica Mountain senior Tyla Greenwood won the state championship after finishing with a 69 on Day 1 and 72 on Day 2, for a total of 141.
Ironwood Ridge’s Calleigh McMahon placed sixth with a 148. Other golfers who placed in the top 20 include Sahuarita’s Alexandra Guerrero at 14 (157), Catalina Foothills’ Jayden Nester at 16 (158), Sabino’s Abigail Gryzynger at 17 (158), Sahuarita’s Paola Guerrero at 18 (159) and CDO’s Chloe Fay at 19 (160).

In Div. I, Rincon/University sophomore Ariela Trejo, a recent ÃÛÌÒÓ°ÏñAV HS Student-Athlete of the Week, finished in 17th place. She is the only Tucson-area golfer in the Div. I girls tournament to finish in the top 20.
Last season was Trejo’s first time competing at the state level and she was eager to return this year, she told the Star ahead of this year’s championship.
“My first state championship was a terrific experience, even though we didn’t have the scores we’d like to have, but it was an overall fun experience,†she said.
