Two months ago, 12 individuals with horse racing interests completed a mandatory walk-through at the Rillito Horse Racing Track facility. Unfortunately, none of those 12 submitted a proposal to operate the track and get it ready for the 2026 racing season.
Last week, Pima County administrator Jan Lesher asked the Parks and Recreation Department to pause improvements of the facilities’ grandstand and clubhouse. About $40,000 had already been spent on upgrades.
That makes it likely that there will be no horse racing in Tucson for the third consecutive year.

Red Hot Kat awaits the second weekend of racing in a stall at Rillito Park Racetrack in 2022.
Said Lesher: “Pima County is committed to reestablishing horse racing in the community.†She will evaluate options near the Pima County Fairgrounds, in the Marana area and elsewhere.
The next move will take place June 3 when attorney Ted Schmidt, member of the Pima County Parks and Recreation commission, will make a presentation to the Board of Supervisors, advocating for moving the horse track, and rebuilding the Rillito Racetrack with sports fields for youth soccer.
